I have compiled the snapshots of the places you’ve sent to me with the art pieces you’ve chosen in the museum archives. Now what I want each of you to do in the next 10 minutes, is to take one place from each set. They will be your place A and place B, it doesn’t matter which is which. Now imagine that you have a character, who is from place A and who has just arrived to place B, and has to explore it. Write a little scene, or maybe just a bunch of questions and sentences that pop into your head. When you ask questions and set the scene, keep in mind the ways in which the experience of the character in place B will be informed by their experience in place A, what differences will be observed, what similarities, what will seem strange or out of the ordinary, what might become a point of fixation, what could be glossed over, and what types of interactions the character will have with the place. Also keep in mind the balance between what you’re interested in personally, and what can be setting the scene for the reader.
